Why should you be strong? by Brooks Kubik

Why should you exercise?

Hey, it's 97 degrees outside, with a heat index of 110 degrees, and all of your buddies are drinking Tall Cold Ones at the Irish Pub down the street, trying to think of the best pick up lines for the Tall Hot Ones sitting at a table across the room -- a trio of leggy Vixens that put the "N" in Nubile, the "L" in Luscious and the D in to die for.

So what's stopping you? Why are you out there in your garage, dripping with sweat, pushing like a madman to finish that final, almost impossibly hard set in your workout?

You don't HAVE to do it, you know.

You COULD just pack it in, blow it off, shower and slide on down to the Pub.

After all, who would ever know? And besides, if you miss a workout, you can have an extra shot of Maximum Muscle Magic, the ergonomic super-blaster from Germany -- it has 77 herbs, 47 amino acids, 98 vitamins and minerals, 353 hydrogenated power plasms (you don't know what these are, but they sure sound good), 454 rapid-release Mega-Molecules (these are bio-engineered for maximum potency), ZERO carbs and anabolic aardvark enzymes, which just have to be good, because everyone knows that aardvarks come first in the dictionary, which clearly makes them number one, and you want to be number one as well.

Well, maybe there's a reason why you're out there pushing and pulling and sweating and straining and puffing, panting and perspiring. Maybe you're doing it because working out makes you strong, and maybe you've learned that being strong means more than just strong muscles. Maybe you've learned that the total package is something that the guys in the Pub will never understand.

In the June, 1933 issue of Strength & Health, in an article entitled "Why You Should Be Strong," Bob Hoffman wrote:

"A man who doesn't exercise will have a weak body, a sluggish mind, weak will and will lack energy. He can hardly hope to succeed in the the times that we are experiencing and can expect to continue to an uncertain time in the future. And the man that lives right and exercises right not only obtains tremendously powerful muscles that obey his every command but his internal organs perform their duties perfectly. He also obtains a thorough mastery of his will and an easy and contented mind.

This frequent employment of one's will power makes it possible to control the body and to easily perform feats that otherwise would be difficult or impossible. This type of man becomes independent and self-reliant. He will never be a coward and when real danger threatens, he is the one that others look to and depend upon.

When a man is strong he has a real mastery over himself. This strength breeds energy and courage, helps to meet with success the more difficult problems and tasks of life. Results in true contentment and enjoyment of living. Who would want to be inactive and weak when proper physical training benefits so greatly?"

Until next time, stay strong!
Yours in strength,
Brooks D. Kubik
